We were asked to review the potential of a development site on Union Street, within the Retford Conservation Area, for Sloswicke’s Almshouse charity who owns the properties that back onto the proposed site.
The development area was predominantly terraced housing, with the development site being a former joinery yard which had remained vacant for several years.
Their vision was to purchase of the site to improve and enhance the rear gardens to the existing Almshouses and to provide further dwellings for charity, and following the review we were asked to design five one-bed dwellings.
The design will extend the existing, attractive elevation to provide three properties fronting on to the street with a single new passageway which will provide access to the rear. The front properties are designed over two floors, while the properties to the rear are on one level, and all will provide good quality accessible accommodation.
Included within this development are extensive landscaping works to level the site, improve accessibility and provide a ‘shared space’ and seating for the residents of both sites to enjoy.
The design received full planning permission and works are currently on site.
