The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Caistor, is a Grade I listed church in the Lincoln Diocese.
Following a falling pinnacle approximately 20 years previous, a poorly repaired section of the Nave roof was allowing water ingress and the copper roof to the tower was leaking. The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Caistor received a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Repair Fund for the repairs and we were appointed to undertake the repairs.
Following the Stage 1 investigation works, and through negotiation with both the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic England the scope of works was redefined and as a benefit of the HLF Grant offer, the PCC replaced the inadequate heating system.
The works to the Nave included the repair and re-covering of the slate roofs. The previous inappropriate felt was removed, and the soft wood repairs were replaced with oak rafters. Rainwater goods were overhauled or renewed, decorative hoppers were retained, parapet gutters reformed, and downpipes and outlets were repaired or replaced. The Tower was over-boarded and reconfigured to the LSA guidelines required for the change in material from copper to lead, before recovering with lead. Stone repairs to the parapet were undertaken and the pinnacles were taken down and rebuilt with stainless-steel dowels.
The works also included the conservation of the late Victorian decorative paint scheme to the Nave ceiling. The previously repaired plaster ceiling was replaced with lime and the Conservators replicated the painted panels.
