St Nicholas Church, Askham, is a Grade II* listed church in the Southwell and Nottingham Diocese.
Having undertaken a Stone Report of this parish church, we identified several areas of concern, including the Prior’s Door, located within the south wall of the 13th century Chancel.
The stonework reveals and arched head had suffered significant decay to the back face which resulted in large gaps and poor weathering against the door, and in some areas, there were pockets of more than 75mm deep.
The purpose of the stone repairs was to provide improved weathering to the door opening and protection to the surrounding fabric and having considered a number of options it was felt that total replacement of the decayed stone arch provided a more effective long-term solution.
The original door was replaced approximately 100 years ago in soft wood with decorative ironmongery and was in need of replacement. We refurbished the original ironmongery and re-used it on the new door which is made from Oak.
