Church of St Mary and All Saints, ‘the Crooked Spire’, Chesterfield, is a Grade I listed church in the Derby Diocese.
The Chancel roof was leaking and had a number of damaged, slipped and missing slates and the North and South Aisle lead roofs, which were old with numerous patch repairs and a number of visible splits, were leaking. The Church of St Mary and All Saints was successful in an application to the Government’s Culture Recovery Grant, through the Church of England’s Covid Recovery Grant Scheme to replace the failing roofs. Due to the sheer size of the roofs and the very tight timetable, the projects were divided into two packages of works with two separate contractors to work simultaneously.
The Chancel roof was stripped, and the larger slates salvaged. Tiling batons and roofing felt was removed before the roof was repaired and recovered with new Westmoreland slates, laid in graduating courses. Lead valley gutters and outlets were replaced to the north and south sides and flashings were all laid in accordance with LSA guidance. Stone joint repairs were carried out where necessary.
The North and South Aisle lead roofs and gutters were stripped, and timbers closely inspected. Damaged timbers were replaced and stained to match existing. All new leadwork was carried out as detailed on our drawings and in accordance with LSA guidance. Roof gutters were formed with falls and drips to current LSA guidance. Stone capping’s were lifted, cleaned and re-fixed with lime mortar and open joints were raked out and re-pointed.
