St Cuthberts Church is a Grade II* church in the Lincoln Diocese
The Church was awarded an English Heritage Development Grant to undertake essential repairs, including the Tower and Spire lead roofs, the re-covering of the Nave and Chancel Roofs, the provision of new rainwater goods and improved drainage and high-level stonework repairs to the Tower.
With complete scaffold access we were able to assess the repairs in more detail and agree the full extent of stone replacement and re-pointing. The lead work was carefully recorded and removed, and the condition of the roof structure was closely inspected. With the gutters completely stripped we were able to see that the wall plates were in very poor condition with areas of significant decay needing either complete replacement or splice repair.
The repairs were carried out in situ, the timber structure needed to be braced and jacked up to provide full access to the timbers and several rafter ends were replaced to complete the structural repairs. The spire and gutters were re-formed and boarded to meet modern standards and covered with new sand cast lead. The nave and chancel roofs were recovered in new and reclaimed plain tiles on a mortar bed. New cast iron gutters and down pipes were provided to all roofs.
