St Botolph Church, ‘the Stump’, Boston, is a Grade I listed church in the Lincoln Diocese.
Wanting to transform this iconic landmark St Botolph Church into a centre for cultural learning, heritage interpretation and a place of welcome and hospitality, the church embarked on their major internal re-ordering scheme – ‘A Passion for People’.
The project, partly funded by the National Lottery (NLHF), included improved facilities within the church, flexible multi-use spaces for community use with level access, interactive interpretation for visitors, modern heating facilities and new porch and glass doors for reduced heat loss.
Having developed the layout with the PCC and wanting to enhance the facilities to offer a warm inviting space, fixed pews to the north and south aisles were mostly removed with a small number of significant pews retained. The floors were levelled to create fully accessible flexible spaces and covered with Limestone flags, laid to a planned design, varying the size and direction of the stones to provide visual interest. Underfloor heating was installed, but due to the sheer scale of the building, additional radiators were added to the perimeter for an additional boost when needed.
An accessible draft proof internal porch was designed for the north door, and fully glazed doors were carefully inserted into the south arch, to ensure that the original medieval doors were retained. Both glass entrances have been installed with automatic openers to maintain the heat and to help reduce heat loss. The porch, constructed in oak and glass, follows the contemporary architectural language already seen in the church.
An educational interpretation and activity scheme was created to tell the stories of the church and the people of Boston.
