Mount Zion Apostolic Church building is the Grade II listed former Capitol Cinema in Nottingham.
Designed by local Architect Reginald W G Cooper, it opened in 1936 and operated as a cinema for over five decades before being converted into a bingo hall and social club before closing in 2004. It re-opened to serve as a church, and has been regularly used for worship and community events.
The building was added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register as Category ‘A’ at immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric and the Trustees sought advice in finding a way forward with the restoration works required to conserve the building.
The church have grand plans for the building and were encouraged to make an application to the NLHF which would look to secure a long-term and sustainable future for the building.
A grant was secured for the development phase, and we were delighted to be appointed to undertake the works. Surveys, investigations and essential ‘stitch in time’ repairs were undertaken to inform a Round 1 application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a broader repair and refurbishment project.
