Grove Street Methodist Church, is a Grade II listed church in Retford, Nottinghamshire.
With minimal alterations to the original fabric or fittings, the Grove Street Methodist Church retains a high quality of embellishment. However, when one of the ceiling bosses became detached and fell to the ground the church was forced to close until we could undertake a full tactile inspection of the ceiling.
The inspection highlighted a number of concerns, and it was concluded that all 37 pendants required extra fixings and the church was awarded a Covid-19 Emergency Response Grant from Historic England for the repairs to the ceiling.
The church had a desire to implement a much bigger plan to brighten the interior by way of a new internal paint scheme. The oval gallery is particularly impressive with an ornately painted coffered ceiling, however, the bold colour scheme detracted from this and we proposed a more sympathetic colour palette.
A full internal scaffold was erected for the inspection and repairs and wanting to take advantage of the internal scaffold, ‘mock’ boards were prepared to give the client a sense of what could be achieved by the colour changes before a final scheme was approved.
