St James’ Church, Moulton Chapel, is a Grade II* listed church in the Lincoln Diocese
Soul Architects were appointed to undertake the HLF Grant Aided Repairs for the reroofing and masonry repairs to the Nave, Chancel, North & South Aisles and Vestry Roofs and the conservation of the internal decorative paint scheme.
Scaffolding and a temporary roof covering was provided while the repairs were undertaken. The structural repairs were carried out and the main roof was re-covered with new Welsh Slate, and the vestry roof re-covered in zinc.
The bell cote was repaired, and a new timber cupola designed and reinstated. Brick and stonework repairs were carried out and, where possible, damaging cement mortar was removed.
The decorative paint scheme was ‘very bold’ and although consistent with Victorian décor was considered inappropriate for the Georgian Nave. We therefore developed a scheme retaining the Victorian stencil pattern behind the Altar and complimenting it with a more appropriate colour within the Nave, more in keeping with the Georgian era.
